Tried, Tested, & True: Tools for Bleaching Your Hair

I am often asked how I get my hair so blonde. I have been stopped by strangers inquiring what salon I go to. I always laugh and tell them "Risky Business".  That's the name of the hypothetical salon my friend Trudy and I came up with. We call it that because we are not hairdressers, yet we experiment with hair color off of a mix of You Tube tutorials, Google, advise from hairdressers we know and trail and error. Disclaimer: Take this advise at your own risk. If your hair falls out, or turns a weird hue, I don't want the hate mail.  If you don't want to take the risk, go to a professional hairdresser.

Step One: Open a bottle of wine, and pour yourself a glass. I'm a pinot griggio kinda gal myself.

Step Two: Gather your supplies. I purchase all mine at Sally Beauty Supply:

White Blond Bleach
Wella Color Charm Toner in: T10 Pale Blonde
Plastic processing cap
Latex gloves (I like the black ones)
Applicator brush
Bowel
Measuring cup
Clairol pure white developer in 20 volume
Clairol pure white developer in 40 volume
Hair clips

Step Three: Put on the gloves. Section off your hair in Approx. 1 inch sections, and clip. Mix the bleach with the 40 volume developer. Side Note: Hairdressers have told me not all hair can handle the 40 volume, so if your not sure, maybe try the 30 volume.  Once it's mixed thoroughly, spread on each section. If you have some back sections grab a friend, boyfriend or husband to help. Side note: The boyfriend or husband will probably put up a fight, then tell you not to tell anyone he acted as your hairdresser. This may or may not of been the case of my husband

Step Four: Put the plastic cap on, and blow dry on a low setting. Approximately 5-10 minutes.

Step Six: Pour Yourself another glass of wine.

Step Seven: Drink your glass of wine well waiting for the color to process. I wait the full 45 minutes.

Step Eight: Rinse that shit out.

Step Nine: Mix the Wella Toner (as directed on the box) with the pure white 20 volume. Paint it in your hair with the applicator brush, and wait up to 5 minutes. Side Note: This stuff usually takes pretty quick, so keep an eye on it. I usually only wait 2 minutes.

Step Ten: Rinse out and follow with a hardcore deep conditioner. My favorite is Moroccan Oil Intense Hydrating Mask. Side Note: I love Moroccan Oil, I know its expensive, but it works so good!

Step Eleven: if you can, allow your hair to air dry. It's already been through enough abuse. I also put a leave in cream conditioner in my hair by combing it through with a wide tooth comb. My favorite is Bed Head Dumb Blond Color Combat Leave In Conditioner Creme

So hopefully after following this "how to", your hair is a platinum blonde.

Here are a couple fixes should you come across a problem:

Brassy: Try using a purple shampoo that is formulated to take the brassy, yellowish tones out. My favorite is Clairol Shimmering Lights.

Hair Turns Grey: This happened to my sister. I'm not even shitting you, and no, she is not a 70 year old lady. Apparently this can happen when you use ash in your hair. She found an awesome remedy for a fix.  3 parts freshly squeezed lemon juice to one part conditioner.  Let stand in your hair for one hour. Then blow dry on low setting for 5 - 10 minutes and rinse.

Now go out there and get your blonde on!

  1. Hair extensions come with a lot of uses. The biggest factor is to make your hair appear longer. Girls with short hair, who want to add length to their hair, can add hair extensions to achieve those results. If you already have long hair, you might want some extensions to add body. Not every girl is fortunate to have full, voluminous hair, and it can be added with Hair Extensions. Hair extensions also can be used for people who have long hair, and want to rock a short hairstyle. Lastly, if you want some added highlights or a few crazy colors in your hair, but do not want to damage your hair by bleaching and dyeing your hair, then extensions like those from Clip On Extensionswill give you what you want without the damage.
